“日本語を大切にしたい. Slow and polite Japanese” – A Japanese Language Podcast Review

“日本語を大切にしたい. Slow and polite Japanese” is a Japanese language podcast that you can listen to in order to practice listening to a native Japanese speaker. The first part of the title generally means “I want to value the Japanese language”. Even though a part of the title is “Slow and polite Japanese”; I do not think that he speaks any slower than a native Japanese speaker. In fact, with some phrases that are quite often used, he speaks quite fast. Even so, he is pretty easy to understand, and it is not that difficult to tell apart individual words. His podcast description says that he “want(s) to share my daily questions, emotion, anger, and frustration with you. I will speak as carefully and calmly as possible in correct Japanese. Foreigners who are studying Japanese are also welcome to listen”. His YouTube channel says that he was a Fuji TV announcer for many years, and that he teaches “announcing” now that he is retired.

This podcast started in December of 2018, and is up to episode 197 as of April 2022. He generally releases one podcast each week, and each podcast is approximately 20 to 30 minutes long. The podcasts are about whatever he wants to talk about, so there are no descriptions of grammar or word usage. As of July 2021, he started putting up his podcasts on YouTube. He will sometimes put a written phrase into the video, and he will say the phrase with the proper pronunciation. At these times, he does speak a little slower and clearer, so it is easier to understand what he is saying.

I like this guy, and his voice. It is not surprising that he was a television announcer. I highly recommend listening to this podcast. Check out his YouTube channel and subscribe, he has less than 200 subscribers at the moment.
