“にほんごとらのまき (Nihongo Toranomaki)” – Japanese Language Listening Podcast Review

This is a great intermediate level Japanese language podcast for those looking to practice their listening skills.

The “にほんごとらのまき (Nihongo Toranomaki)” podcast is an intermediate/advanced level Japanese language podcast. You can use this podcast to practice your Japanese listening skills, and try to pick up more of the Japanese language. Makiko talks about many different topics of daily life, and has conversations with other people (most of the time) on her podcast. Sometimes the episodes are only Makiko, by herself, talking about various things.

Makiko describes her podcast as more exciting than the boring textbook Japanese, and other podcasts where Japanese is spoken slower than normal. She also emphasizes that she focuses on natural conversation. She has conversations with her son, her friends, and other family members; although there are some episodes where it is just Makiko. You may also run into an episode, or two, which features Makiko having a conversation with one of her students. Makiko is also a Japanese teacher, and has a website with transcripts of each podcast episode.

As you should expect from the above paragraph, only Japanese is spoken on this podcast. Maki began releasing episodes of the “Nihongo no Toranomaki” podcast in November of 2021, and currently has 39 episodes. Episodes of the podcast have been released at a rate of one each week. Each episode is somewhere between 10 to 20 minutes in length, with the average being around 15 minutes.
