Suntory Commercial – What is a Suntory Beerball?

Over the last few years, stories have appeared in the news about declining beer sales in Japan. It appears that the younger generation is just not that interested in beer, but likes other types of alcoholic drinks better. I’m sure the high tax on beer (malts really) also has something to do with the declining beer sales. A result of that high tax are many different types of ‘beers’ that rely on less, or no malt, in the beer. Japan does not tax on the amount of alcohol in products, but rather the amount of malts (Japan Beer Tax). It looks like Japan is moving towards a more uniform tax on all types of alcohol by 2026 (story).

Either way, enter this new way to ‘enjoy’ beer: the Suntory Beerball. What is a Suntory Beerball you ask? Well, beer with carbonated water or club soda. Just like a whisky highball, but with beer. At first thought, you would think that a watered down beer would be bad, right? That’s what I thought, but the Suntory Beerball mixer is 16% alcohol. I can’t tell you what it tastes like, I have not had one yet. For now, enjoy these commercials for Suntory Beerball…
