Midnight Diner 2015
The “Midnight Diner” shows began as a short television series in 2014. This “Midnight Diner” is a movie on Netflix that was released in 2015. This movie has the same cast of characters for the ‘regulars’ that show up in the diner. And the policeman from the local Koban in Shinjuku is the same actor as in the television series.
Each customer has their own problems and their own special request. He’ll cook you anything, and his food always helps.
The movie is broken down into a few ‘acts’, and seems like a series of short shows compiled into one movie. Just like the television series, each act features a type of food that the main character for that act likes to eat. There is also an overarching story that continues throughout the entire movie. The story that continues throughout the entire movie is an urn that was left by a customer. At the end of the movie the urn story arc is concluded.
One of the stories in the movie is about a young woman that comes to Tokyo from the countryside. They never really explain it fully, but I think she is running from and abusive relationship. The relationship is between her and a former boss at a restaurant. Although when the local policeman intervenes, it is almost seems like it is a human trafficking type of situation. I think the story with the most impact in this movie is near the end. It is about a survivor of the 2011 earthquake tsunami who lost his wife. Her body was never found, and he has to learn how to deal with that grief.
The Midnight Diner series is a great watch. You will laugh, you will cry, it is all around a lot of fun.
If you don’t have Netflix, or you would just like to have Midnight Diner 2 all to yourself, the below Blu Ray on Amazon has both the 1st and 2nd Midnight Diner movies. But be careful, it is an import, and I believe is only playable on Asian region players. It is Japanese audio with English (and other) subtitles.
